ABOUT MALTA > About Mellieha Village

Mellieha is a rural village and a tourist resort in the NOrth part of Malta and derives its name from the word melh meaning Salt. Mellieha used to be one of the most popular places to make salt being so close to the sea which is at the foot of the village.

In the late 17th century, the Knights built several fortifications along the coast to protect the inhabitants. Under the British in 1844, Mellieha was estabilished again as a parish and it has now a population of about 6,500 people.

Today, Mellieha is one of Malta's most picturesque tourist destinations. The village centre boats hotels, restaurants and other traditional shops. It also has a primary school, a magnificient baroque church(built in late 19th century), band clus, sports clubs, and also a parish community centre.

Mellieha celebrates its feast on the 8th September although celebrations officially start on the 30th August. This is a must if you are going to be staying in Mellieha at this time.

Mellieha people are renowed for their friendliness and hospitality.
