ABOUT MALTA > Village Feast 8th September

Mellieha celebrates the feast on the 8th September every year, although the celebrations officially start on the 30th August. The statue of Our Lady is taken out of its niche. This takes 9 days for the celebrations to be over.

Several musical programms are organized by the Mellieha Band Clubs and several marches around the streets of Mellieha between the 2 - 7 September and are accompanied by several supporters of each band club.

One of the biggest factors that makes a village feast that is unique is the colourful fireworks.The fireworks light up the skies and ground fireworks are held on September 7, a show which ends at about 12.00a.m.

The 8th September is mostly celebrated by the event that in World War 11, a ship loaded with food made a crippling entry to the Grand Harbour after being bombed and being the only ship that made it to the Island with food. This saved the people of Malta from starvation.

The day after the feast 9th September, will be a holiday for a lot of people of Mellieha and most shops will close as well. Most people go to the beach and finds this as an excuse to have another day of holiday. Why Not??
